Lewis Hamilton will continue his career at Ferrari in 2025. Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said he thinks the seven-time world champion’s decision is strange.
“Lewis has made a strange transition,” Racingnews365 quotes Ecclestone. “Toto Wolff was very dependent on him and the two of them became close to each other for selfish reasons. But I don’t think they ever had a relationship where they could completely trust each other. Obviously, there was no such relationship, which is why Hamilton decided to leave.
His decision really surprised me because I don’t understand why he announced the decision a year in advance. Why didn’t Lewis wait to tell and do it during the season?
Ferrari think they made a smart deal by bringing him in, but I think Lewis got into his ego.
Frédéric Vasseur has known Lewis since he was just starting his career. For John Elkann, the chance to have one of the best Formula 1 drivers in the team, and some believe Lewis is the best, is also a chance to stroke his ego. It happens, it’s just a lot of factors coming together.”
Bernie Ecclestone said he would not invite Hamilton to his team: “There are too many unnecessary complications. Lewis is really in a way calling the shots at Mercedes. Toto let him do this until Lewis was satisfied and wouldn’t leave. But in my team I didn’t allow riders to do this kind of thing.”
