Remembering Banutas Ancanes: Legendary Latvian Artist Passes Away, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Iconic Artworks

Farewell to the artist Banyutas Ancānes on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 3pm in the Great Hall of the Crematorium.

There is no series of masterpieces in the creative work of the famous artist Banutas Ancanes – icons of Latvian art history – works of art that have become classic and indelible values.

Ancāne was fond of photography, still life and figurative art compositions. Cultivating delicate finesse both in lithography and pastel work and drawings. Fine color nuances, emotional feelings and almost intangible materiality are characteristics of Banutas Ancāne’s handwriting.

The Latvian graphic artist, Banuta Ancane, worked in photo graphics and book graphics, using mostly lithography and etching techniques.

She studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts, Department of Graphics, graduating in 1967 with the diploma thesis “Portraits of Actors” (Kārlis Sebris, Rasma Garne, Antra Liedskalniņa, Leo Šmits) in independent technique. Since 1969 Union of Artists of Latvias ball. He received several awards: diploma at the 4th All-Union Stamp Exhibition (1974), diplomas at the 4th and 5th Tallinn Graphics Triennale (1977, 1980), diploma at the 2nd Riga Miniature Graphics Triennale (1987), Diploma of the Union of Artists and medal for the best creation of the performance of 1988.
