The body of Faraj Allah Jarjour, the Canadian tourist who died in Cuba on March 22, and whose remains had been “lost” by the regime, appeared this week.
After almost a month of the death, and weeks without rest for the family, in which they tried to receive a response from the Cuban dictatorship or the Canadian government, without success, finally the body of their father would have been located, nothing less than in Russia.
The case became famous a few days ago, when the family announced that after paying more than $10,000 for Mr. Jarjour’s repatriation, Havana sent them the body of an unknown Russian, and no one knew how to tell them where their relative was..
After resorting to various means, both governments finally agreed, and The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, came out to publicly apologize for the incidentbut he still couldn’t say where the body was.
Now, finally, it was detected that the error in sending the remains would have been an exchange, and the body of the father of the family was located in Russia, where it was already veiled and buried.
According to the television TVA Newsthe family of the deceased Russian did not examine the body, and therefore had not realized that they were not the correct remains.
“At least we know where it is. It’s not easy for us […] Until now I was lost, I had to look for my father’s body,” Miriam, Faraj Allah Jarjour’s daughter, told the aforementioned media.
Now all that remains is for the family to finally receive the correct body in Montreal and bury it. Although this has not yet been officially clarified, it is expected that the Cuban regime will absorb the costs of the new repatriation, since it was an institutional error.
While Rodríguez Parrilla stated that they will begin an investigation to find out who was responsible for the confusion, the truth is that this is not the first time that this type of error has occurred, and the bad experiences of tourists on the Island continue to accumulate, mainly due to the poor or non-existent response of the government in emergency situations.
