Liverpool finished 2:2 against West Ham and stayed away from the championship

West Ham – Liverpool 2:2

Scorers for West Ham: Bowen (43), Antonio (77); Scored for Liverpool: Robertson (48), Ogbonna (own, 65)

After the midweek derby loss to Everton, which significantly reduced their chances of winning the championship, Liverpool needed a win today (Saturday) in the away game at West Ham to stay in the three-way battle against Manchester City and Arsenal. But it didn’t happen. Despite coming back from behind to take the lead, it finished 2:2, lost points for the fourth time in its last five league games, and now its chances for the championship are extremely slim.

Mohamed Salah, who has been faltering of late, has been ruled out, with Cody Gakpo starting in the center of attack with Lucho Dias and Harvey Elliott flanking him. The first half was balanced with opportunities for both teams; Dias was very close to scoring, but his ball, which had already passed the goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, hit the crossbar. Jarrod Bowen, who was a doubt before the game, maintained his habit of excelling against Liverpool. Two minutes to the top, he hit the advantage of the host after a lift by Mohamed Kodos.

The start of the second half was all about Liverpool. Already in the 48th minute, she equalized, when Diaz’s breakthrough ended in a pass to Andy Robertson, who scored after Areola headed to the crossbar and in. In the 65th minute, Gakpo’s ball hit West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna and splashed in. Liverpool’s advantage could have been greater if not for Dias’ misses and Areola’s good ability. But Bowen continued to play well, and Liverpool paid the price: in the 77th minute, the Englishman equalized for Mikael Antonio.

Now Liverpool has two points less than the first Arsenal (they have a game less) and a point less than City (they have two games less). City will play against Nottingham Forest tomorrow, and Arsenal will try to keep their chances in the title race alive in the north London derby against Tottenham.
