Controversy over inheritance plans for ill grandmother: Family divided on moral implications and financial strategies

Thanks for all the readers

My husband’s grandmother is very ill and unfortunately it shows… unfortunately there are already discussions regarding inheritance 🙁 My parents-in-law and my sister-in-law will inherit the majority.

Aunt is living in a (state funded) retirement home aged 50 due to long term addiction. Her carer believes that any inheritance would go towards financing the home immediately and the aunt would have no money. There is nothing left in her life… she might be able to use the large amount of money to buy a small place at some point if things get better.

My husband and father-in-law now believe that it is better to save the inheritance for them so that the state will not notice anything. yes i know…you can criticize.

But besides that, my sister and I think it’s inappropriate to plan like that because grandma is still alive. She would support that, but how would she feel? Is your family already making plans?? which feels morally wrong. In addition, the sister at this time is not bright and would not take care of anything on her own.

So our family is completely divided on this – I’d be interested in other opinions. I will leave it to my husband’s family but we don’t know exactly what advice I will give.
