The memory and work of the famous artist Stavri Kalinov will be honored with the “Post Mortem” exhibition, presented by the “Diplomat” Art Club and the “Sredets” gallery at the Ministry of Culture. The exposition includes 12 sculptures and 49 paintings – painting, cold ceramics and graphics. The official opening is on April 30, the artifacts can be seen until May 23.
Stavri Kalinov – a respected name in monumental and small sculpture, painting, graphics and applied art, died last autumn at the age of 78. After graduating from high school, he worked as a freelancer in the field of posters, commercial advertising and making art objects. In 1977, he graduated from the National Academy of Arts – specialty “Wood Carving”, in the class of Prof. Asen Vassilev. Works with silk, plaster, bronze, silver, gold, cold ceramics and glass. Stavri Kalinov opened his first solo exhibition in May 1980, when he exhibited 70 of his sculptures. Following are tours in Vidin, Gabrovo, Varna, Nessebar, Plovdiv, former Yugoslavia, Italy, Australia, Germany, Spain, Great Britain, France, USA, Switzerland, Belgium. He made portraits of Vasil Levski, Jules Paskin, John Atanasov, Boris Hristov, Nikolay Gyaurov and other famous Bulgarians. His is the sculpture “The Truth about the Feather” in the garden in front of BTA in Sofia. In 2006, a 10-meter “Fisherman Statue” was erected at the entrance to Old Nessebar, which became a symbol of the city. Works by Stavri Kalinov are owned by Bulgarian and world celebrities, including Pope John Paul II, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne , Lloyd Klein, N.V. Simeon Saxe-Coburg, Lily Ivanova, Bill Clinton and many others.
Stavri Kalinov is the author of the statuettes awarded to the winners of many competitions and festivals. He is the recipient of various awards, including the “Golden Age” of the Ministry of Culture – for significant contribution to the development and popularization of Bulgarian culture (2016), the “Crystal Star” of the “Makta” gallery (1995) and others. Lyuben Stanev, general manager of Art Club Diplomat, commented: “We have always supported Stavri Kalinov’s work and his contribution to Bulgarian and world art. It is of great importance to us that its rich aesthetic heritage is preserved and presented in such a dignified way. With this exhibition, we prove that we will not allow Stavri Kalinov to be forgotten!”.
