The 45-year-old Slot is in his third season at Feyenoord. In the first one, he led the club to the final of the European Conference League, won the league title last year and won the Dutch Cup on Sunday. Currently, the team, for which the Czech representative Ondřej Lingr also plays, is in second place in the Dutch league, nine points behind PSV Eindhoven.
Last year there was speculation that Slot could take over Tottenham. Finally, he will lead the nineteen-time English champion in the Premier League.
“I like the way his team is playing. From everything I’ve heard about him, he’s a good guy,” Klopp said at Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against West Ham. “I like that a lot – good guy, good coach. I’m happy if it works out. It sounds really good,” said the German coach.
Klopp announced his departure from Anfield back in January. He explained that he needed to rest. In the 2019/2020 season, he led Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years. He reached the Champions League final three times with the club and dominated the competition in 2019. In the same year, he won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Reds. On the domestic stage, he added victory in the FA Cup and the League Cup in the 2021/2022 season.
Slot spent his entire playing career in the Dutch league and so far has only trained in his home country. Alkmaar was ahead of Feyenoord. In the past two years, he received the Rinus Michels Award for the best league coach. In the week he confirmed his interest in leaving for Liverpool. “Of course I would love to work there,” he told ESPN.
