Air Force awards $13 billion contract to Sierra Nevada Corp for ‘Doomsday’ plane successor

The Air Force has awarded a $13 billion contract to Sierra Nevada Corp to develop a successor to the E-4B, known as the “Doomsday” plane because of its ability to survive a nuclear war.

The Regenerative Air Operations Center (SAOC) project is designed to replace 1970s-era aircraft that are nearing the end of their service life.

To meet operational requirements, the weapon system will consist of a commercial jet engine hardened and modified to military specifications.

Usually used to transport the US Secretary of Defense, the Doomsday Plane is designed as a mobile command post capable of withstanding nuclear explosions and electromagnetic effects, allowing US leaders to issue orders to out to the army if there is an emergency.

The E-4B is also capable of mid-air refueling and has advanced communications equipment and conference and briefing rooms. It is also equipped with weapons control systems that allow it to control air and ground forces.

The Air Force currently operates four E-4B aircraft, at least one of which is still operational at all times. The aircraft can remain in the air for several days, allowing it to continue working even against the destruction of infrastructure.
