Peristeri – Tenerife 93-97: Lost semi-final after much praise – 2024-04-27 09:26:57

Peristeri paid for the lack of experience in the biggest meeting in its history. Vassilis Spanoulis’ team was defeated by Tenerife in the semi-final of the Basketball Champions League in Belgrade with 93-97 and will claim the 3rd place in the tournament. At halftime, the score was 42-43.

Peristeri played very good basketball and kept the lead in the first 25 minutes of the game, despite its bad three-point percentages: 16-11, 23-19, 31-27, 36-32, 49-46. The experienced Huertas, Sermandini gave Tenerife a boost at the end of the third period and brought it to 66-60. Nikos Hugaz reduced to a point (66-65), but the Spaniards escaped with 12 points thanks to the unstoppable Guy.

Peristeri launched the last counterattack after 87-75. Two back-to-back 3-pointers by Stelios Poulianitis reduced the score to 90-85 with a minute and a half to go, Dangubic made it 90-88 and Mitrou-Long made it 93-90, but a missed defensive rebound provided the free throw (95-90) .

Elaija Mitrou-Long was the leader for Peristeri with 18 points and 6 assists. Trevor Thompson, who late last week was accused of abuse by his partner before the charges were dropped, played normally and scored 11 points. Spanoulis also used Ragland 14, Poulianitis 12, Dangubic 13, Love 5, Mitrou-Long 18, Williams 3, Kaselakis 5, Hougaz 7, Renfro 5.

Tenerife, champions in 2022, have won the trophy twice in the last seven years, while they are in 5th place in this year’s Spanish League, with a record of 19-11.

The match took place on an innovative glass floor in Belgrade’s Beogradska Arena (where Spanoulis won the 2005 European trophy with the Greek National Team), in front of very few spectators. Peristeri had the enthusiastic support of 500 Greek fans.

Our familiar Giorgi Sermadini scored 21 points for the Spanish team, while Kyle Guy, who started this season in Panathinaikos, was the protagonist of the semi-final with 34. 41-year-old Marcelinho Huertas was the leader of Tenerife with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists

Sunday’s final will be a Spanish affair, with last year’s finalists Malaga and Murcia vying for the second ticket.
