Bryan Pérez, athlete of the Effort and Glory Program, today became the second national athlete to confirm his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by receiving a place for universality from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The first Salvadoran athlete to qualify directly was the badminton player Uriel Canjura, placing himself among the top 37 in the world ranking.
With the confirmation, Pérez will fulfill his dream and goal that he had sought since 2020, the year in which it was assured that surfing would be present in this Olympic event. The national, on that occasion, could not reach his classification because he was eliminated in the round of 16 of the ISA World Surfing Games El Salvador 2021 and said goodbye to Tokyo 2021.
While for these Olympic Games, Bryan would seek his direct pass in the qualifier held in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, but an injury sidelined him from the event. However, his good results allowed them to have the place for universality.
The official Paris 2024 surf event will take place in Teahupoo, Tahiti, from July 27-30. It is relevant to mention that French Polynesia has the most challenging and dangerous waves on the planet.
48 surfers will compete in these Olympic Games, 24 male and 24 female athletes. In total, there will be eight more surfers compared to Tokyo 2020.
Some of those qualified for this event are: for Japan they are Kanoa Igarashi, Reo Inaba, Shino Matsuda, for Australia, there are Ethan Ewing, Jack Robinson, Tyler Wright and Molly Picklum; while for Brazil, Filipe Toledo, Joao Chianca and Tatiana Weston Webb have achieved positions; the locals will have Johanne Defay, Vahine Fierro and Kauli Vaast; while from South Africa there are Jordy Smith, Matthew McGillivray and Sara Baum; meanwhile, New Zealand, Billy Stairmand and Saffi Vette; for Italy, there is Leo Fioravanti; from Central America Costa Rica, Brisa Hennessy.
