The 1The Student Congress of Social & Political Sciences “Active Citizenship. Citizen at School-Citizen of the World”, was completed with complete success on April 5th, 6th and 7th at the premises of the Pedagogical Department of the University of Ioannina.
The Student Conference was co-organized by the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Epirus, the Laboratory of Social Sciences and Education of the Pedagogical Department of Primary Education of the University of Ioannina, the Education Advisors PE78 of Social Sciences of the Regional Directorates of Education of Attica, Epirus, Thessaly and Central Macedonia, and the Primary and Secondary Education Consultants of Epirus in collaboration with the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education of Ioannina, Arta, Preveza and Thesprotia.
More than 1,600 speakers and delegates, 200 school units from various parts of Greece and a large number of teachers and parents participated in the work of the Conference, who had the opportunity to attend 450 original papers, workshops, round table discussions and visual creations of students. Kindergartens, Primary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, Special Education School Units, School Networks and teenage groups met in a creative and fruitful three days, highlighting good practices, interesting proposals and studies on active citizenship, Civil Society and the education of democratic citizens.
By general admission, the contribution of the Student Congress to the quality upgrade of education is important. The quality of the work, the essential participation of students, the support of the Education Advisors, the presence of teachers, parents, institutions and authorities, the cooperation of the three levels of Education and the perfect cooperation of the members of the Organizing Committee and the Scientific Committee, created an environment which strengthened the political literacy of the students and offered the appropriate conditions for scientific discussion, exchange of views and osmosis between the participants. In addition, the presence of hundreds of students and teachers in the city of Ioannina strengthened the local economy and highlighted the cultural wealth of the city throughout Greece.
I would like to thank all the students and teachers for participating and supporting this idea, but also for the effort they make in general to upgrade education and make it more outgoing. The various suggestions gave rise to intense reflections and fruitful and creative discussions among all.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that the Conference was the product of a collective effort. In this light, I would like to express my warm thanks to the members of the Scientific and Organizing Committee for their decisive contribution to its implementation and smooth conduct. Special thanks to the school counselors who worked tirelessly and methodically for months from the conception of the idea to the holding of the conference. I also warmly thank my colleagues at the Epirus Regional Directorate of Education for the willing administrative support they provided. Finally, I extend my warm thanks to the president of the scientific committee, Mrs. Suzana Maria Nikolaou, and to the volunteer group of students of the Pedagogical Department of Elementary Education of the University of Ioannina who tirelessly supported the work of the Student Congress.
