SYRIZA: “The report of the State Department is an insult to the Government” – 2024-04-25 18:15:30

On the occasion of the US State Department’s report on human rights and the report that exists in Greece, SYRIZA attacked the Government and Kyriakos Mitsotakis personally.

“The US State Department’s report on the status of Human Rights in Greece is another insult to the Mitsotakis Government. It fully confirms the concerns that other international organizations have already expressed about the state of the Rule of Law in Greece”says SYRIZA PS in a statement.

At another point he points out that “The State Department report highlights that Greece in 2023 showed no progress on the front of Human Rights protection. On the contrary, the US government expresses concern over a series of important issues that were also highlighted by the recent resolution of the European Parliament on the Rule of Law in Greece”.

The announcement of SYRIZA

“A special report of the US State Department, released yesterday, describes the Human Rights situation in Greece in the darkest colors.

The State Department report highlights that Greece in 2023 showed no progress on the front of Human Rights protection. On the contrary, the US government is expressing concern over a number of important issues that were highlighted by the recent resolution of the European Parliament on the Rule of Law in Greece.

Indicatively, it refers to the “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment” of immigrants and prisoners, to targeted violence against racial or ethnic minorities and to and crimes involving violence or threats of violence against members of the LGBTI+ community.

In relation to the wiretapping scandal, the State Department’s report exposes the Mitsotakis government. It adopts opposition and international media reports which have argued that the pattern of evidence implicates Greek authorities in the use of the Predator. It focuses on the findings of the Data Protection Authority which showed that at least 92 Greek citizens have fallen victim to the malicious software. He makes special mention of the Reporters Without Borders report and their concerns on the one hand about the monitoring of journalists in Greece and on the other hand about government control of the Media.

Finally, the State Department’s remarks about the corruption of state officials and public officials and how convicted deputies avoid prison do not go unnoticed.

The US State Department’s report on the Human Rights situation in Greece is yet another blow to the Mitsotakis Government. It fully confirms the concerns that other international organizations have already expressed about the state of the Rule of Law in Greece.

SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance is saddened that a report with such a large international impact contains so many negative reports about our country. However, the problems can no longer be hidden and the embellishments of the Mitsotakis media system no longer have any force whatsoever.

For those who haven’t realized it yet, what is at stake in the June 9 elections is the quality of our Republic and the country’s international position.”
