Buenos Aires. The Argentine Senate approved this Thursday by show of hands and without prior discussion a resolution that increases the salary and travel expenses of its representatives, so that they go from earning 1.9 million gross monthly pesos (1,900 dollars) to 6.3 million pesos (6 thousand 300 dollars), which net amounts to more than 4 million pesos (4 thousand dollars).
“Approved,” confirmed this Thursday the vice president and president of the Senate, Victoria Villarruel, before concluding the session.
The initiative, which was not included in the session called for this Thursday, was promoted by dissident Peronist senator Juan Carlos Romero, an ally of the ruling coalition La Libertad Avanza (far-right).
The approved resolution guides as of May an increase in the modules, the unit of administrative measurement, which entails not only an increase in salaries, called per diems, but also in travel expenses, an additional for representation and uprooting expenses.
The measure, which was voted by show of hands, without a record of who supported it, includes the incorporation of an additional salary, as a bonus.
“It is established that starting in May of this year, national senators will receive a total of 13 annual allowances,” states the approved resolution.
The president, Javier Milei, highlighted that “the only seven who voted against are the senators from La Libertad Avanza”, before adding that in the parliamentary elections of 2025, “the beating will be historic.”
As could be seen in the recording of the plenary session, several legislators did not raise their hands, which did not mean that it was a vote against.
To pass the resolution, a two-thirds vote of those present was required, but without a roll-call vote, support for the measure cannot be verified.
