Rally in support of Jorge Glas in Quito, Ecuador – Europa Press/Contact/Liao Siwei
MADRID, 9 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Ecuador has reported that former Vice President Jorge Glas, who has been hospitalized in recent hours, is stable and under observation after refusing to eat in prison, after he was forcibly detained last week following an assault by the Ecuadorian Police to the Mexican Embassy where he was taking refuge.
The national prison service of Ecuador (SNAI) has indicated that during the morning count carried out in the Guayas prison, the surveillance personnel “warned that the person deprived of liberty Jorge G. did not respond to the call made”, so “Security and health care protocols were activated.”
“Thus, it was determined that the person deprived of liberty Jorga G. suffered a possible decompensation due to his refusal to consume the food provided by this State Service, during the last 24 hours,” reads a statement.
The SNAI has reported that “with the aim of guaranteeing comprehensive care and in strict observance of safety protocols”, the emergency services of the Ministry of Health transferred Glas to the Naval Hospital of Guayaquil, where he was admitted around 12:45 p.m. (local time, 9:45 p.m. Spanish peninsular time).
Hours earlier, sources cited by various media outlets in the Latin American country reported his hospitalization, attributing it to an overdose of medication, and with versions that varied from that he was in a coma to that he had returned to the La Roca de Guayaquil prison.
The leader of the political movement Revolución Ciudadana (RC) and president during Glas’ mandate, Rafael Correa, has commented on the news published by several Ecuadorian media on his X account. «It was what he feared. The scoundrels will jump for joy. Strength, Jorge! “They were always the corrupt ones,” he published.
