Reliable system
In the event that the situation deteriorates further, the possibility of reliable transport across the country will be of the utmost importance.
There, Inlandsbanan’s low technical standard can be an asset.
Experience from the war in Ukraine has shown that the simpler and less complex the systems, the more reliable they have proven to be.
However, there is a large maintenance need estimated at 12 billion kroner over the entire Inlandsbanan. (Photo: Inlandsbanan)
Inlandsbanan’s system, with its low degree of technology, can function completely autonomously, writes DN. The system is also the best functioning under “highly disturbed conditions” according to the defence’s own analyses.
Large maintenance debt
However, the inland railway suffers from a maintenance debt of around SEK 12 billion. Funds that the current government promised would be added before the election, but nothing has yet happened in the matter.
However, it is not only the Defense Forces that have an interest in an equipped Inlandsbana. Many companies along the route would be given new conditions with a functioning track. (Photo: Inlandsbanan)
“We are waiting for a new analysis from Inlandsbanan of higher track fees to finance a possible loan”, says Maria Stockhausmember of the Riksdag’s traffic committee.
However, it is not only the Defense Forces that would look favorably on an upgrade of the Inlandsbanan. A functioning railway would open up new opportunities for many companies along the route to expand.
