Lines at telescopes at the San Cristóbal Museum to see the eclipse

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis. “I came because I wanted to see what an eclipse is like and I didn’t want them to tell me about it,” said a Tsotsil woman who this Monday went to the spaces of the San Cristóbal Museum (Musac) to see the phenomenon through a telescope or lenses. specials.

“Since everyone wants to see an eclipse, I came too. And don’t I have the right? ”Replied the woman who declined to give her name when she was asked why she came.

Originally from Chamula, the woman also refused to have photographs taken showing her face, so when she stood in front of the telescope she covered her entire head with a light blue shawl.

Another woman identified as María Sántiz Pérez, from the municipality of Pantelhó, stated that she wanted to see the eclipse to tell her children that they could not appreciate it because they are working.

“I already looked at it and I’m happy because I had never seen an eclipse before, because when I was a child my mother locked us in a room so we wouldn’t see it because they said it was bad,” she said.

“I’m going to tell my children that I came to the park to see the eclipse,” added the 58-year-old woman.

Attracted by the phenomenon, dozens of people gathered in front of Musac since the morning to observe the eclipse, since telescopes were placed at that site and lenses were provided to see it safely.

Astronomer Francisco Torres García, originally from San Cristóbal, commented that the eclipse generated many expectations, which is why lines formed to access the telescopes and special lenses.

A member of the Astronomical and Geographic Society of Ciudad Real, Mexico, a subsidiary of the Astronomical Society of Spain, Torres García said he was “excited, although in this area we only have 50 percent of the phenomenon.”
