MADRID, 11 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Evgenia Kara-Murza, the wife of Vladimir Kara-Murza, sentenced to 25 years in prison in Russia for high treason, expressed this Thursday her fear that the opponent and journalist will end up dying in prison like the dissident Alexei Navalny.

“As he does not receive medical help to combat his polyneuropathy, I think the Kremlin hopes that one day he will simply collapse,” he stressed in an interview with the newspaper ‘The Guardian’ on the second anniversary of his arrest.

Kara-Murza has detailed that her husband, who has British nationality, has spent the last six months in solitary confinement in a six-square-meter cell. «We are very concerned about his health, which will only get worse. “She has lost 25 kilos since his imprisonment,” she explained.

The British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, has indicated in a statement for the anniversary that it is essential to denounce “Russia’s callous disregard for his deteriorating health,” as he has been denied “the medical treatment he so desperately needs.”

“A victim of two separate poisoning attempts prior to his imprisonment, Kara-Murza is now being subjected to degrading and inhuman conditions in prison, clearly designed to further harm his physical and mental well-being,” he added.

Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison last April for several crimes, including high treason, dissemination of false information about the Army and cooperation with an undesirable organization. In addition, Russian Justice banned him from practicing journalism for seven years.

The prominent dissident, who was already considered by the Russian authorities as a foreign agent, was arrested in April 2022 with the military offensive on Ukraine already underway, and his situation has been criticized on several occasions by Human Rights organizations.

The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Russian autonomous district of Yamalia-Nenetssia announced on February 16 the death of Navalny, sentenced to 19 years in prison for extremism, after “feeling unwell during a walk.” The European Union and its partners blamed the Kremlin.
