Ecuador designates foreign criminals as targets – 2024-04-24 02:42:45

Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa cartel.

The leaders of the Sinaloa cartel (Mexico) and the border commands of the dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) are on the list of “military objectives of terrorist groups” published by the Government of Ecuador as part of the “internal armed conflict” that has been declared against organized crime gangs.

The Presidency of Ecuador released in the early hours of this Friday a list with names and photos of the main leaders of transnational organized crime groups whose illicit activity, mainly linked to drug trafficking, has an impact on Ecuadorian territory.

The most important objectives include Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambadaconsidered the heir of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán within the Sinaloa cartel, and also Giovanny Andrés Rojas (‘Spider’)who is presumed to be in charge of the border commands of the Second Marquetaliathe largest dissident of the FARC.

With the dissemination of this list, the link that Ecuador exercises within the drug trafficking routes as a country of connection between the production of cocaine in Colombia and the cartels in Mexico that are responsible for sending it to the United States is confirmed.

Within this relationship, a set of Ecuadorian criminal gangs operate in Ecuador, which the authorities consider to be the main causes of the wave of violence that the country is experiencing and which has made it one of the first in homicides in Latin America, around the 45 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023.

Among the Ecuadorian criminal bosses that appear on this list is Jose Adolph Macias (‘Phyto’)considered the leader of The Chonerosthe largest and oldest criminal gang that operates in the country, and who has been a fugitive since the beginning of the year, when he escaped from prison where he was serving a 34-year prison sentence for drug trafficking, organized crime and murder.

It’s also on this list Wilmer Chavarría (‘Pipo’)who allegedly acts as leader of The Wolvesthe main competition of Los Choneros, and who is speculated to direct this criminal organization from outside Ecuador.

Likewise, in the Los Lobos group there is also Carlos Angulo (‘The Invisible’)whom the Ecuadorian Police have identified as the alleged intellectual author of the murder of the presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio last year, whose crime he allegedly planned from prison.

Among them is also Fabricio Colón Pico (‘Captain Pico’)alleged lieutenant of Los Lobos who at the beginning of the year, during the series of simultaneous riots that were recorded, managed to escape after being arrested with the complaint of the attorney general, Diana Salazarof being planning an attack against her.

With the declaration of “internal armed conflict” by President Daniel Noboa in early January, these criminal gangs came to be considered terrorist groups and non-state belligerent actors to be neutralized by the Police and the Armed Forces. EFE (I)
