Washington will pay nearly $139 million in damages to more than 100 gymnasts sexually abused by Larry Nassar, a former national gymnastics team doctor.

The US government will pay nearly $139 million to more than a hundred former gymnasts who were sexually abused by a former national team doctor. This is reported by the Ministry of Justice.

60-year-old Larry Nassar was one of the most respected sports physicians in the United States. As the miracle doctor of the national gymnastics team, he has been treating young gymnasts since 1986, making them injury-free and ready for medals. Until it started raining complaints in 2016. Nassar’s abuse was a shock not only because of its scale, but also its brutality. He abused the girls under the pretext of treating them for injuries, sometimes with one of the parents present in the same room.

Top gymnasts such as Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols testified against him. Biles pointed not only to Dr. Nassar, but to the entire system that allegedly made the abuse possible. Nassar is said to have sexually assaulted at least 256 young girls.

In 2017 and 2018, he was sentenced in three different trials to a total prison term of up to 175 years. There is no chance that Nassar will ever be released. The damages come after numerous complaints from victims who accused the FBI of “failing to conduct an adequate investigation.”
