Misuse
Returning stolen bicycles to the rightful owner will become a little easier from Tuesday, thanks to a new irremovable sticker.
The various Ministers of Mobility in our country will officially launch the MyBike sticker on Tuesday. The idea is that you stick the irremovable sticker on your bicycle. If your bicycle is stolen, the police can easily find the (current) owner based on the QR code on the sticker. An improvement compared to the current system, where the owner’s national registration number is often engraved in the bicycle frame. But what if the bicycle is sold? With the new MyBike system that has been in use in Brussels for some time, you can always change the contact details of the owner — for example after the bicycle is sold. This way, the police always reach the right owner, which increases the chance that a stolen bicycle will end up back with the correct owner.
This week is the national week of action against bicycle thefts. In our country, an average of 100 bicycle thefts are reported to the police every day. Although the actual number is much higher. To reduce the number of bicycle thefts, the Ministry of the Interior recommends always securing your bicycle with two locks. The police are also asked to pay more attention to bicycle thefts by, among other things, rounding up gangs of bicycle thieves using decoy bicycles.
