This is now the nineteenth edition of the Holiday Sentiment Monitor. This measures, among other things, the ‘holiday intention’ of the Dutch and some other Europeans, including those of the Germans, Belgians and English.
Effect on registration
According to NBTC, of all the nationalities surveyed, Dutch people strongly indicate that they would change their holiday because of the weather. “What we see most is that 38 percent say that severe weather affects where they go on vacation, ie what they book,” said Dorine de Gast from NBTC to Editie NL.
Of the group of people who say that the weather plays a role in their chosen holiday, 18 percent say that they therefore book last minute more often. “Then they can make the right choice for a nice destination,” says De Gast.
Another destination
Some people do not change their destination, but choose to go on vacation in a different period. “They are relatively less than the people who change their destination,” continues De Gast. “About 43 percent.”
It is easy to explain why people are more likely to change their destination than the time they go on vacation. “This is due to school holidays and construction holidays,” De Gast explains. “As a result, people cannot change times.”
May holidays
The weather causes problems, especially in southern Europe. “Terrible hail in Italy caused evacuations and high temperatures and drought in Spain meant that it was not allowed to fill swimming pools,” Marc de Jong from Buienradar told Editie NL. “That’s why many people say, for example: ‘I won’t do Spain in the summer anymore, but I will do it during the May holidays.'”
“The trend is: it will get warmer and there will be severe drought,” he continues. “There is heat and the rain continues. That may sound like a contradiction, but warmer air can hold more moisture, so there’s also more frequent heavy rain.”
Multiple factors
At the same time, actual weather is not the only thing that people take into account when deciding their holiday. “Of course it is also related to the prices of a trip and in a country and the stability of the holiday,” continues De Gast from NBTC. “For example, traveling there: should you go by plane or can you go by car? But in particular the impact of extreme weather on our choices has increased significantly.”
