At the start of the second period, the hosts confidently took the lead after goals from Kyle Palmieri (17′), Bo Horvat (20′) and Anders Lee (24′). In the second half of the game, the guests returned to the game after a goal from Teuvo Teravainen (34′), then Seth Jarvis (51′) reduced the gap to the minimum.
At the end of the game, Carolina got ahead even with the removal of its goalkeeper – Andrei Svechnikov fired a powerful shot, which was put into the goal by Sebastian Aho (58′). And just nine seconds later, the guests surprisingly took the lead – Semyon Varlamov lost concentration for a few minutes, which Jonathan Martinuk (58′) took advantage of, who managed to throw the puck from behind the goal behind Russia. The last puck was scored into the empty net with a pass from Svechnikov by Jake Guentzel (60′).
Notably, the Islanders attempted just 12 shots on goal throughout the entire game, the second-worst record in franchise playoff history. In the final period, Carolina outscored the Islanders 17-1.
“It was a special evening. It’s one of those games we’ll remember for a long time,” home coach Rod Brindamore said after the game.
