Newsreader Huw Edwards will not return to the BBC. The news channel reported on Monday that Edwards (62) resigned after forty years of service. Edwards became controversial last year after he was accused of paying a minor for explicit photos. He did not return to TV after that. Last modified: April 22, 2024, 4:58 PM
“Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC,” a statement said. The news organization also reports that Edwards resigned after “medical advice” from his doctors. The BBC further reports that it has “accepted” the resignation and believes “it will enable all parties to make progress.” The BBC believes it is “not appropriate” to make further comments.
Edwards was one of the BBC’s best-known faces. He was often deployed to cover major news events.
His departure comes nine months after his wife said he was admitted to hospital with “serious mental health issues”. This happened after tabloid The Sun published a piece alleging that a BBC presenter had paid a 17-year-old youngster for explicit photos.
It was unclear for a long time that it was Edwards, until his wife revealed this and stated when he had been admitted. Edwards has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. His wife stated at the beginning of this year that Edwards responds as soon as he is mentally able to do so.
