Returning stolen bikes to their rightful owner will be a little easier from Tuesday, thanks to a new non-removable sticker.
The various Transport Ministers in our country will officially launch the MyBike sticker on Tuesday. The idea is to put the non-removable sticker on your bike. If your bike is stolen, the police can easily find the (current) owner based on the QR code on the sticker. An improvement over the current system, where the owner’s national registration number is often engraved into the frame of the bicycle. But what if the bike is sold? With the new MyBike system that has been in use in Brussels for some time, you can always change the owner’s contact information – for example after the bike has been sold. This means that the police will always reach the right owner, which greatly increases the chance that a stolen bike will be back in the hands of the right owner.

This week is National Bike Theft Action Week. In our country, an average of 100 bike thefts are reported to the police every day. Although the actual number is much higher. To reduce the number of bicycle thefts, the Ministry of the Interior recommends always securing your bicycle with two locks. The police and the judiciary are also being asked to pay more attention to bike theft by, among other things, rounding up gangs of bike thieves using decoy bikes. (were)
