Rzeszów has decided. Konrad Fijołek wins the elections

Konrad Fijołek, the incumbent president of Rzeszów, was re-elected as the ruler of the capital of Podkarpacie. He won 56.1 percent. votes, which allowed him to maintain his position. His opponent in the second round of elections, Waldemar Szumny from Law and Justice, received 43.9 percent. votes. These results come from an exit poll conducted by Ipsos.

The survey, which was conducted for Polsat, TVN and TVP, showed that turnout in Rzeszów was 45.5 percent.

Konrad Fijołek, a 47-year-old sociologist, has been a member of the city council since 2002, also serving as its vice-chairman. He became the president of Rzeszów in June 2021, after winning early elections. He replaced President Tadeusz Ferenc in this position, with whom he worked closely.

During the elections, Fijołek won support of almost the entire united opposition. He won in the first round, obtaining 56 percent. votes. In this year’s elections, he was supported by parties such as PO, Nowa Lewica and Polska 2050, as well as many local associations. In the second round, PSL also supported him. This party’s candidate for the mayor of Rzeszów, MP Adam Dziedzic, won the fourth result in the first round of elections, obtaining almost 9%. votes.

Fijołek was guided by the slogan in his election campaign “Rzeszów is the most important”. He had the same slogan during the 2021 campaign. “For us, this slogan is still valid. Before large and small politics, the interests of individual groups, Rzeszów is always the most important,” he declared in the PAP survey.

During the campaign, Fijołek emphasized that he wanted to focus on reducing traffic jams in the city and on housing estate investments. He also announced that he wants to complete the projects he started in the previous term, including the construction of a water park and a road connector of Warszawska and Krakowska streets.

His opponent, Waldemar Szumny, is 56 years old and is a mathematician. He has been working in the Chancellery of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship Board for several years. He has been a councilor of the city of Rzeszów for 26 years, and since 2019 he has been vice-chairman. He has been active in PiS structures since 2001.

In his election campaign, Szumny declared that he wanted to restore the city’s development dynamics and introduce solutions that would make life easier for its residents. He also promised to introduce an annual ticket for public transport for PLN 365. His election slogan was: “Rzeszów. It can be done.”

In the first round of the elections, which took place two weeks ago, Fijołek won 37.91 percent. votes, and Szumny 23.24 percent.
