Terry Anderson, Journalist Held Hostage by Hezbollah, Dies at 76: A Look Back at His Captivity

Washington:The United States was held hostage by Hezbollah in Lebanon for six and a half years. Journalist Terry Anderson (76) has died. He died Sunday at his home in New York. The cause of death was complications after heart surgery.

Anderson was captured by Hezbollah, an armed group opposed to Iran, in 1985 when he went to report on the conflict in Lebanon while he was an AP correspondent in West Asia. Released in 1991. Anderson is the longest running Western host in Lebanon. He turned his memories of captivity into a book in 1993 entitled ‘Den of Lions’.

A daughter, Zulomi, was born within months of Anderson’s capture. Sulomi was only able to see her father at the age of six.

Anderson served in the Navy for six years before turning to journalism. After his release from captivity, he returned to the US and became a lecturer and professor of journalism at various universities. He also ran two restaurants. US Received millions of dollars in compensation from frozen Iranian assets. This was because Iran was involved in Anderson’s recruitment.
