LaLiga has reported this Sunday of the death of Luis Gil, who was active in the historic Mallorca of the 1996/1997 season that achieved promotion to First division. The Valencian, 48 years old and suffering from a long illness, was the director of LaLiga’s Competitions and Player Office.
Gil was a forward who Víctor Muñoz was promoted to the first team after standing out in the vermilion reserve team in Second B. He was barely twenty years old and it was his debut in professional football. He played five games in a team designed for promotion and that he had players like Obiku, Carlitos, Galvez, Stojilkovic and Ernesto Valverde.
He didn’t score, but he started on one occasion, curiously in the memorable tie against Orense (1-1) in the Lluís Sitjar that, despite that Mallorca he was leader of Segunda, propitiating the dismissal of Víctor Muñoz and the succession of Tomeu Llompart. In fact, that team had to go up in promotion after losing to Rayo Vallecano. Mallorca has mourned the death of one of its former players on social media.

“His departure leaves us with a deep void., but also a legacy of integrity and dedication to football, taught us, among other things, that vision from the point of view of the professional player that LaLiga needed,” says Javier Tebas, president of the association, in a message published on his official account. Luis Gil, born in Pobla de Vallbona (Valencia) on January 28, 1976, He also played for SD Logroñés, Gimnástic de Tarragona, Murcia, Sevilla, Polideportivo Ejido, Elche, Tenerife, Alicante and Alcoyano, the club where he hung up his boots.
He was part of the board of directors and was also manager of AFE for six years until he joined LaLiga to direct the competitions department and the Player’s Office, “an area from which he has participated very actively in working for the well-being of footballers, the best possible coordination with other institutions in the preparation of calendars , the design of the competitions, etc.”, says LaLiga in a statement.
“The personal and professional void that Luis Gil leaves, both in LaLiga and in the football industry, is immeasurable. We will miss him. Rest in peace, friend and colleague,” adds the letter from the club collective, which sends “an enormous hug and all the strength in the world in these difficult times” especially to his wife Lola and his children Gabriela and Luca.
