BERLIN (AP) – Rafael Nadal confirmed on Monday that he will oppose the Cup of Speech in Berlin in September, which may be the last competition from the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles.
Nadal said 2024 could be his last year on the Tour and it was confirmed this week after he was beaten in the second round of the Barcelona Open, competition who has won 12 times, against Alex de Minaur who “would probably be his last one there”.
“At this point in my career, I want to enjoy every opportunity that comes my way,” said the man Spanish tennis player it is a statement.
The 37-year-old Spanish superstar has had injury problems for several years and has played just five competitive games this year, three in Brisbane in January and two last week in Barcelona .
The Cup of Speechwhich takes place between September 20 and 22 on the indoor hard court, pitting the European Team against the World Team, in a format similar to the Ryder Cup.
Nadal and Roger Federer met in the doubles at London 2022 in the Swiss’s last competitive duel before his retirement.
“I’m happy to argue about it Cup of Speech in Berlin with the European team,” said Nadal. “I have special memories with the experience I have with the Cup of Speechencompassing all the emotions of two years ago in London playing with Roger for the last time.”
