Accident
A cyclist was seriously injured in a traffic accident on the Statielei in Mortsel on Monday. The victim was hit by a truck. Everything points to a blind spot accident.
The accident happened around 2.15 pm on the Statielei. According to the first reports, the cyclist, a woman, was riding on the cycle path in the direction of Oude God station. At the intersection with the Prins Leopoldlei, the cyclist was hit by a truck that wanted to turn right.
The fire brigade placed a screen at the intersection to hide the victim from view and an ambulance arrived on the scene under MUG escort. “The cyclist was seriously injured and was taken to the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA) in Edegem,” said spokeswoman Jessy Spoelders of the local Minos police.
The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation. “Currently everything points to a blind spot accident,” says Spoelders.
An ambulance also arrived on the scene for the driver of the truck. “The truck driver was in shock and required medical attention,” said Spoelders. The police have temporarily closed the Statielei intersection to traffic.
