He National Migration Institute (INM) of Mexico has found 366 dead migrants on the border with USA since 2019, the first full year of the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Of that total, 235 cases have been in the Piedras Negras and Acuña area, in the state of Coahuilaand in Matamoros, Tamaulipason the northeastern limit of Mexico, as revealed this Thursday by the organization, which depends on the Ministry of the Interior (Segob).
The institute offered this figure in a statement in which it reported the donation of airboat equipment from the United States Embassy in Mexico, “in a collaborative effort to carry out humanitarian rescue actions for migrants in the Bravo River«, which divides both nations.
“The new equipment will allow the Betas agents to expand their search and rescue actions for migrants who risk their lives when trying to avoid the waters of the Rio Grande that cross the states of Coahuila and Tamaulipas”he pointed out.
In the same period of time, the 22 Beta Groups of the INM have served more than 1.02 million people “in vulnerable situations” in nine states: Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas y Oaxaca.
“Given the unprecedented migratory flows that are being recorded on both sides of the border and in the world, in which Mexico is one of the nations with the greatest flow of migrants to the United States, it is essential to undertake bilateral actions”concluded the INM.
The figures are reported after the International Organization for Migration (IOM) last September declared the border between Mexico and the United States as “the most dangerous land migratory route in the world”, with more than 686 migrants dead or missing in 2022.
Mexico reported an increase of nearly 77% in irregular migration in 2023, with more than 782,000 undocumented foreigners detected. EFE (I)
