Jump, turn, fall; 10 and 100 times a day. Get back on the diving board, look at the pool and try again until you achieve the perfect dive. This is how Osmar Olvera lives the last weeks before his second Olympic participation.
With the media, brands and sports authorities observing their preparation, the team polishes each of their jumps to the millimeter, listens attentively to the instructions of their coach Majin and carries out self-criticism that helps them not repeat their mistakes.
Any detail elevates you from 8 to 10 or sinks you from 9 to 7; At this point the only thing left to do is polish my list and always try to look for perfection.
Olvera shares to The Conference on a typical training day.
Carrying the hopes of millions of people is not too heavy a burden for the diver, who at 19 years of age is ready to make history twice in Paris: get the first medal in the three-meter springboard after the one won by Fernando Silver in Sydney 2000 and achieve the first metal in the synchronized modality for Mexico.
I am excited to return to the podium on the springboard, a test in which we were a powerhouse. It would be a historic achievement to get two metals and I believe I have the ability to do it
adds Olvera with a special shine in his eyes.
If he wanted, he could spend his time running yards on a football field or teaching physical education classes. Either path would have meant an uncomplicated future for the man from the capital, who decided not to play it safe and dedicate himself to diving.
“I did go with my dad to play, but it’s not the same adrenaline, I never felt so much passion for that sport. With the jumps it was different, it was like an immediate spark; that moment of falling in the air, spinning and feeling the water…I can’t explain in words what it means to me,” says one of the athletes in whom Mexicans have the most faith.
The athlete is the son of Sergio Olvera, one of the best runners in the history of the Águilas Blancas and currently head coach. Her sister practices flag training while her mother, grandmother, and uncle are physical education teachers.
I’m the only one who went a little off the family script, but they are very happy. The idea is for my parents to go to the pool in Paris. A different vibe will be experienced by the public; I think I will experience a dream
added the diver, who enjoys spending time preparing delicious desserts for his family or discovering a new series or movie.
It takes the diver a couple of minutes to reach the diving board. Once placed, view, count and execute. Nothing distracts attention from it. It is a sport of high precision and elegance, with no room for hesitation.
It’s your moment, no one else’s. You don’t see or hear anything. Everything happens very quickly and it is very important to know that you are there because you earned it, that you deserve that opportunity to go down in history.
Osmar Olvera grew up sheltered by a generation led by double Olympic medalist Paola Espinosa and world medalists Rommel Pacheco and Jahir Ocampo.
They all gave me excellent advice, I learned from watching them train because there is always someone who does things better than you. I am like a sponge that absorbs everything you can contribute to your career.
At the top, the diver does not forget those who formed his foundations.
I have a lot to thank several people, like my first coach Adair Mata, who taught me what I know about diving, to be competitive and have character. With Majin I learned the Chinese technique, the details that make the difference.
The young man traveled to China on Saturday, where he will participate in the World Cup Final, the last competition before Paris 2024.
I want to get rid of the pain of Tokyo, when I didn’t make it to the final. I have world cups, pan-americans; I have grown mentally and physically. I am ready to beat the Chinese and the English.
