Exactly 154 years ago, the future leader of the world proletariat, Vladimir Ulyanov, was born in Simbirsk, who later took the pseudonym Lenin. Representatives of the older generation, unlike the younger brothers, know this almost by heart. But the history of the appearance of the monument on the main city square is not known to everyone.

The location for installing the sculpture of the leader was not chosen by chance. They decided to place it next to the building of the city party committee. In January 1986, the Bratsk City Executive Committee approved the composition of the author’s group to create a monument to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin under the leadership of Moscow sculptor Gennady Potapov.
In March, he brought his sketch of the sculpture to Bratsk for approval. Then, in collaboration with Viktor Zimin and Victoria Astrakhantseva, a second version of the sketch was made with several figures to choose from. One of them received approval.
In the spring of 1987 in Tashkent, at an artistic and decorative casting factory, an almost five-meter bronze figure of Lenin was made on the basis of a plaster model.
How to deliver it to Bratsk? The distance is huge – more than 4.5 thousand kilometers! We decided to take it by car. This transport operation was performed by driver A. A. Savchenko.
The construction of the monument was carried out by workers from the Bratskgorstroy trust – the team of A.P. Isaev. On the night of October 8-9, they installed the bronze sculpture on a pedestal. And on November 4, on the eve of the day of the Great October Socialist Revolution, the monument was solemnly opened. The removal of the white canvas from the statue was entrusted to the honorary citizen of Bratsk, Hero of Socialist Labor A.G. Galin and the winner of the pre-October anniversary watch, the young garment factory worker E. Krasnoshtanova.
It is noteworthy that the residents of Bratsk were called to the opening ceremony with the help of leaflets that were dropped over the city from an airplane.
The statue of the leader has been preserved in almost its original form for 38 years. However, few people know that there are other monuments to Lenin in Bratsk. Watch the video about this at the link.
