Florida authorities shared new images showing the arrest of a subject accused of trying to kidnap a Cuban child in a Miami Beach business in mid-February.
Likewise, recordings show the suspect, identified as Nicholas Sternaman, behind bars while being questioned by police officers.
The images were shared by Telemundo 51, and were captured by the body cameras of the police officers who went to the site after the attempted kidnapping was reported.
The report begins with the minor’s father speaking with the officers, explaining what happened inside a pharmacy last February. Likewise, they show an officer requesting DNA samples from the suspect, while he is inside a detention cell.
The police recordings also showed part of the operation that was put together after receiving the complaint, and show how the collaboration of a good Samaritan allowed Sternaman’s arrest.
According to the police report, Sternaman entered a Miami Beach CVS in broad daylight and tried to take the small child who was with his parents.
The business’s security cameras captured how the minor, four years old, was held by the man while he tried to drag him by the neck. The intervention of his father and other clients prevented the subject from completing his task, which caused him to try to escape from the scene.
Luckily, the collaboration of a tourist from Tampa allowed the capture of the subject a few streets from the place where the events occurred.
“With five children of my own, I felt their pain. Everyone was looking around, ‘Bro, this guy is going to escape!’” this person said after being questioned by the police.
The man, upon realizing the situation, photographed the Sternaman and called the police while chasing him on foot, this to ensure that he did not escape.
“I came out and saw him, and I said ‘This guy can’t escape.’ So I immediately called the police and started running after him,” she added.
According to relatives of those affected, the family had just arrived in the United States, so what happened affected them quite a bit.
“The child is quite affected, with bruises and pain. He feels very bad. They have only been in the country for 15 days, and they did not expect something like this to happen to them. They were simply leaving the pharmacy, walking calmly, and suddenly this individual covered the child’s mouth and tried to kidnap him in front of them,” Betsy Rodríguez, the Cuban boy’s aunt, declared on that occasion.
The man had already been arrested previously, although only for petty theft. On that occasion, he was released after paying bail of $150. However, he now faces charges of aggravated child abuse and assault.
