There was a big crack at the Relegation Play-offs. In a head-to-head match, RWDM today put its direct opponent Kortrijk on a five-point gap (no bridge?). After just 24 minutes, KVK was already facing a 0-3 deficit. The West Flemish almost fought back, but in the end all hope would come too late. Kortrijk cannot afford one more mistake.
KV Kortrijk – RWDM in short
- A key moment: In the 90th minute, Abdelkahar Kadri scored the equalizer. His long shot is well placed, but Hubert concedes with a good save. Soon after, Reine-Adélaïde decided the game with the score 2-4.
- The May Man: At a generally poor RWDM, no one excelled in football. The key to the game was at the back. Guillaume Hubert scored two goals, but was also good for several saves. KV Kortrijk could focus a little better on the pictures and headers.
- amazing: KV Kortrijk often seemed to have the upper hand, but that is not reflected in the statistics. Both teams had 8 shots on target. RWDM was consistently sharp on the counter.
Quick double tap
The first of two clashes between KV Kortrijk and RWDM was very important in the relegation battle. The West Flemish started with 2 points behind the people of Brussels.
The interest was clear at KVK, which started wildly. Goalkeeper Hubert had to make an early save from a deflected cross from De Neve. A shot from the same De Neve went over.
RWDM could breathe a sigh of relief and scored themselves in the 11th minute. Pirard saved another attempt from Mercier, but Gueye put it in.
The unexpected RWDM trend was not over yet. Three minutes later the score was 0-2.
Center back Sousa was at the far post to head in a corner. KV Kortrijk thus suffered a double blow.
Kortrijk ineffective
The RWDM party wasn’t over yet. Midway through the first half, Camera laid down easily. Joao Silva pulled his shirt.
Ref Jan Boterberg looked at the VAR screen for a long time, but still marked the spot. Carlos Alberto received the ball and finished calmly: 0-3 after 23 minutes.
KV Kortrijk did not give up. He created three head chances in a row. Ambrose, Joao Silva and Sissako could not get past Hubert. The efforts were poorly focused.
About 10 minutes before half time the home team scored. A cross from the left was not kicked in by Kadri, but was kicked in by Thierry Ambrose.
Nothing happened in the time left before half time and the 7 minutes of extra time: 1-3 at half way.
RWDM continues
Parts of the second half were a little more balanced. Both teams created chances. KVK’s only threat for a long time was limited to Davies’ shot into the side netting.
RWDM missed some chances to kill the game. Makhtar Gueye kicked first against Joao Silva and a little later his head was too weak.
So the 2-3 came out of the blue. Isaak Davies defeated Makosso in a head-to-head fight. His slow header is out of Hubert’s reach and flows into the goal through the post.
It didn’t give Kortrijk an immediate boost. The opportunities continued to overtake both opportunities. RWDM was consistently sharp on the counter.
Time after time the ball came to target the striker Gueye, but his shots were not sharp. Pirard was a two-time Kortrijk champion.
The last chances for an equalizer came during regular play. 5 minutes from the end, Davies had a shooting chance, but Makosso helped Hubert slide.
The goalkeeper himself acted in the 90th minute. Kadri’s long shot went to the corner. Hubert had little trouble with it.
In the actual final, there were too many balls that Kortrijk lost. RWDM got a place on the counter and in the last seconds Reine-Adélaïde was able to make it 2-4. Gueye was principal on duty.
RWDM is already firmly in the jumping spot in the rankings. KV Kortrijk now leads by 5 points, just like Eupen, who will meet Charleroi soon.
Comments after KV Kortrijk – RWDM:
- Nayel Mehssatou (KV Kortrijk): “We knew we couldn’t lose, but it was a crazy game. I can’t explain those 3 goals in fifteen minutes. We responded and came back well. The chances were there, but unfortunately the 3 -3 didn’t happen.
- Yannick Ferrera (RWDM coach): “Such a victory means more than a 3-0 victory. Because of our early lead, Kortrijk is starting to attack with a lot. That makes it difficult for us, but we defended to good with a lot of intensity. it was very hard to swallow that 2-3 after chances on the 2-4. I’m 10 years older after such a game We don’t always get 4 goal, so we have to defend better too I’m very happy.”
Step by step
2-4: Books closed, RWDM wins
Big party in Kortrijk with the RWDM players. Reine-Adélaïde scores just before the whistle after a counter.
One more minute. Can Kortrijk put together an attack once more? RWDM is always hiding on the counter.
Gueye does not finish
Sambu tries to counter and sends Gueye away, but the attacker’s shot misses Pirard. The angle was sharp.
The end is in sight for RWDM. They still need to defend successfully for another 4 minutes to get the three points.
7 – extra time
An additional 7 minutes will be added.
A very important save
Kadri tries a long shot, but Hubert makes a strong save. It keeps RWDM straight.
Just not every time
The parity will hang in the air, but KVK doesn’t seem to want to complete it. Avenatti is casual on a rehearsal of Mampasi. Ojo then completely loses his control.
Almost 3-3
Isaac Davies misses the balance. The ball is placed wide and Davies can shoot, but Makosso’s attack is caught between them.
Save Pirard!
Once again RWDM comes close to an important goal. And again it is Gueye who misses. He goes high for a corner, but his header is too close to the goalkeeper.
Time is gradually running out for KV Kortrijk. It is not so easy to find a place and there is still about 10 minutes to save a point.
Again the RWDM player is still on the ground. Sousa has received another blow to the head. Ref Boterberg has to stop the game.
Fog gueye 2-4
A RWDM striker can only run to goal because of a ball loss, or so it seems. With a good effort, Mampasi continues to press on. Gueye’s shot is average and Pirard makes the save.
Hot for RWDM purpose
Maybe KV Kortrijk is going against. Davies delivers a dangerous low cross. He cannot reach Afolabi.
Double treatment
Two players were knocked out in an accident on the edge of sixteen RWDM. Sambu is in the worst condition, but he is still standing.
