Over 40 years ago, the “Golden Times” star committed a crime.
– We took a chance and it was stupid, says Per Gessle in “Thank you for the music”.
But Niklas Strömstedt notes that the crime was the beginning of something big.
Per Gessle65, has a “criminal past”, reveals Niklas Strömstedt65, i SVT:s ”Thanks for the music”.
The presenter has obtained a document which turns out to be a judgment from 1977. It states that Gessle smuggled goods with him in connection with a trip from Elsinore – without announcing it to customs.

Among the contraband were 0.7 liters of spirits, an electric guitar, two microphones, two tripods and cables.
The items were purchased in London and included a Gibson guitar and an amplifier.
– When we came to Sweden, we thought, “Damn, we should pay VAT”, and we didn’t have any money, so we took a chance and it was stupid, says Gessle and laughs.

Sent letter of regret to the police
But he was quick to admit the crime – and also sent a letter of remorse to the police:
– Where I wrote that we were poor students who just wanted to play pop music and apologized. So I got the stuff back, but I was fined two thousand bucks, which was a fortune, he says in the program.
It was lucky that Gessle apologized and got the equipment back, states Strömstedt. Because the music that was created thereafter led to a successful career for the star who released several mega-hits over the years.
“Thank you for the music” is broadcast on SVT on Saturdays.
