Passionate about rowing since they were children, sisters Alessia and Valeria Palacios, along with their inseparable friend, Adriana Sanguineti, made a promise to qualify for the Olympic Games in the future. Eleven years later, the dream came true and the three will be in Paris 2024 representing Peru.
Members of the Paris 2024 Program of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), our compatriots won their place in the largest multi-sports event in the world, in the Pre-Olympic Games in Brazil, at the beginning of March.
“Achieving the classification with my sister and our best friend was a unique moment. We had been dreaming of it since we started rowing at the age of 12 and now at 23, we were able to achieve it. When we reached the finish line and they told us that we had secured the spot, we only asked that Adriana also qualify to be together in Paris,” says an excited Alessia, who competes in the light double category (LW2X) alongside Valeria.
With her characteristic smile, Adriana Sanguineti evokes everything they went through to achieve their goal. “You don’t know how hard we trained to get this ranking. We had several obstacles, but we knew how to overcome them, and that makes you happier when you achieve your goal. Thanks to the IPD who always supports us, last year we made several tours around Europe to improve our performance. We also thank our coach Diego Mejía, who helped us achieve our dream,” said the lightweight athlete (W1X).
ITS PREPARATION
For her part, Valeria Palacios assures that “classifying all three to Paris is the dream of my entire life.” But she knows that now they must work twice as hard to seek “the podium or an Olympic diploma.” “In a few days we will go to Paracas to train. We will also travel to Brazil in the fortnight of April and then we will be in Europe, about three or four weeks. From there we go straight to France,” she revealed.
Four months away from Paris 2024, which will be from July 26 to August 11, our compatriots are focused on improving their performance at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, where they reached the final in their modalities, although unfortunately they could not win a medal. Therefore, now they are sure that they will continue on the path of success and the entire country trusts them.
