Basilicata: Chiorazzo meets Conte and Schlein but does not withdraw his candidacy

One step forward and one step back for the wide field in Basilicata. The confrontation with the dem and M5s begins, but Chiorazzo is not leaving for now.

“I am and will remain on the pitch.” As Angelo Chiorazzo – indicated by the Basilicata Casa Comune movement as a gubernatorial candidate for the regional elections of 21 and 22 April – does not withdraw his candidacy. He made this known with a statement after the meetings he had today at the Nazarene with the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schleinand at the home of the president of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte.

So far, what had been defined as “a tight negotiation” to clear the field of the socio-healthcare operator not liked by the Movement and pave the way for an alliance along the lines of Sardinia, which led to the victory by Alessandra Todde. The new governor of the island herself expressed her opinion on the matter when she arrived at the closing event of Luciano D’Amico’s Abruzzo electoral campaign in L’Aquila.

In a note, the founder of the Auxilium cooperative highlighted that “in recent days numerous media have been giving space to repeated inferences regarding my candidacy, attributing the most varied behaviors to me without even questioning me. I understand that in recent days numerous political interests, local and national, around Basilicata”.

Chiorazzo continues: “And it is true that a cordial and open dialogue is underway with the Democratic Party and the M5S at a national level to find a solution to be competitive in view of the regional elections of 21 and 22 April. In recent months I have always been guided solely and exclusively by love for my land. This is why I am and remain on the field. Our electoral campaign continues; just today we announced an event on gender inequality for next Tuesday. At the same time I am doing everything possible, continuing the discussion already started with all the political forces, to make the alternative camp stronger.”

The two main centre-left forces are not extinguishing their hopes of an agreement.

“We are working for Basilicata, we are working on a credible candidacy representative of everyone and all the civic forces. We have discussed with Chiorazzo and will continue to discuss with him, with the Democratic Party and all the forces that want to work for a progressive alignment” , the president of the M5S said after the meeting. “The objective – added Giuseppe Conte – is to have a serious and credible programme. We must develop a program and we are already there. Now we must find a candidate who represents everyone and who obviously gives us the possibility of being able to all go together but in a credible way.”

“The discussion of these hours to arrive at a unitary solution in Basilicata is positive”, they declare Igor Taruffiresponsible for the Pd e organization Davide Baruffi, responsible for local authorities of the national secretariat. “The Democratic Party is committed to uniting, reaching out to everyone and even today it has met with Angelo Chiorazzo to find a positive solution together”.

“The meeting that took place today tells us that there is a willingness on the part of all the actors to commit to a project and a shared name. We are available, as demonstrated, to sit down to find together the solution that represents the best future for this region”. This is what we read in a note from the M5s. “The discussion that has developed so far has been important and fruitful; however, a further step is needed to arrive at the indication of a credible and unitary candidacy, which makes all the forces involved feel represented and reflects the desire for change expressed by the Lucanian territory ”.
