FC Groningen won by a large margin against Cambuur (3-0) on Saturday evening. The Pride of the North went to rest with a 2-0 lead after a strong first half. There were goals from Marvin Peersman and Thom van Bergen. Goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus received a red card twenty minutes before the end, making Dirk-Jan Baron make his debut for the FC. Top scorer Romano Postema ended the game just before the end with the liberating 3-0.
FC Groningen played a very strong first half in Euroborg against the Frisians of SC Cambuur. From the first moment, coach Dick Lukkien’s team had the pressure on the opponent. Led by the 22,118 supporters who supported the green and white in Euroborg.
The first heading opportunity was for Marvin Peersman after 4 minutes of play from a corner. After Marco Rente came close to scoring after a corner kick, the third time was a hit. Peersman put his team at 1-0 halfway through the first half with a hard header.
The Pride of the North continued and converted the dominance into a second goal. Romano Postema beautifully put fellow attacker Thom van Bergen towards the goal. Van Bergen dribbled briefly and hit the target very hard, 2-0.
The FC kept the momentum and did not encounter any problems defensively. The team had the ball frequently and when it was at Cambuur, the defending and the battle for the ball started with the strikers. A third goal was not possible before halftime, despite Laros Duarte, Leandro Bacuna and Jorg Schreuders making good attempts.
At the start of the second half, Duarte crossed the field several times with the ball at his foot. The first real serious shot after the break also came from the midfielder’s foot. The Cape Verde international shot just over the goal after 50 minutes of play.
After about an hour of play, Van Bergen had a great chance for his second goal of the evening. Johan Hove released Bacuna beautifully with a bounce. The captain kept the overview, but Van Bergen headed into the hands of goalkeeper Yanick van Osch.
FC Groningen had to continue with 10 men for the last twenty minutes. Hidde Jurjus was sent off after an alleged collision with a Cambuur attacker. As a result, Dirk-Jan Baron made his debut, coming on for Van Bergen. From that moment on, FC Groningen had one task and that was to fight for the three points.
The 22,118 supporters competed en masse and sang the Pride of the North. The team had a more difficult time with one man less and Cambuur increasingly saw half of the FC. Top scorer Romano Postema ended the game in the 85th minute. Luciano Valente released substitute Isak Määttä very cleverly. The Norwegian beat the FC’s top scorer and Postema scored his 18th competition goal of the season, 3-0. The explosion in Euroborg was great after the final whistle. Players and supporters fought together for the three points.
FC Groningen will play against leader Willem II in Tilburg next Friday. The away section is completely sold out for the fifth match in a row. Ticket sales for the away match against Telstar (on Friday, May 3) have started for supporters who belong to the priority group. Available tickets for other season ticket and club card holders will go on sale on Thursday, April 25 at 9:00 am. This is a day later than usual.
