The National Forest Campaign “To keep the forest green” attracted a record number of participants – more than 100 forests were planted in the country

April 20 the largest forest planting festival organized by the State Forestry Office, the Ministry of the Environment and the Lithuanian National Cultural Center took place – the National Forestry Festival “That the trees are green”. This year, the forest tree is special – a large group of citizens participated in the campaign, thanks to which more than 100 fir trees were planted throughout Lithuania, thus giving meaning to the centenary of the Song Festival.

The National Forestry Festival is an annual tree-planting festival that has become a tradition, during which Lithuanian forests are planted and restored, thereby contributing to the increase of our country’s forest cover. Every year, this action brings together a large group of citizens, organizations, and communities who are indifferent to nature and forests for a common goal, and this year the forest planting talka called to honor the centuries-old traditions of our nation.

“Rainy Lithuanian weather is the best for trees and nature. Volunteers will plant 700 hectares of new forest in one day throughout Lithuania, which will be green for our future generations. The forest cleans the air, cleans the road, unites with a good spirit, just like our songs over the centuries. The national forest tree is not only a tradition of reforestation, but also a symbol of unity. Let’s treasure it,” notes Minister of the Environment Simonas Gentvilas.

“This year we are happy to have many noble opportunities to plant a forest. We celebrate not only the centenary of the Song Festival, but also the 20th anniversary of joining the EU and NATO. This woodpecker is like a symbol that a large group of compatriots value and cherish not only forests, but also traditions, a safe and free tomorrow. I’m glad that even though the weather is rainy, a record number of participants gathered. This shows that doing good work is appropriate in any circumstances – by focusing on a common goal, we can do a lot of beautiful and meaningful work,” says Valdas Kaubrė, head of the State Forestry Office.

According to Valdas Kaubrė, the general director of the State Forest Office, the National Forestry attracts more and more people every year. This year, a record number of people took part in the campaign – even about 15 thousand. This large group of helpers includes both those who have been involved in logging for more than a year, and those who are completely new to this experience. During the annual tree planting festival, foresters join forces with the public, thus giving meaning to love for nature, the forest, and centuries-old traditions. In addition, it is a great way to introduce citizens to forestry and the fields of activity of foresters.

“We named the Lithuanian song festival commemorating the centenary “That the forest is green”, because we want to encourage people to think not only about today, but also about the future. We invite you to understand the theme of the holiday as a duty to unite, take action and preserve our culture, traditions and nature,” said Saulius Liausa, director of the Lithuanian National Cultural Center.

This year, about 150 corporate teams joined the reforestation, which understands reforestation as a sustainable team-building activity. Forests were also planted by representatives of culture, ambassadors, ministers, members of the Seimas and municipalities, local communities, and educational institutions.

Every year, the State Forest Office plants more than 30 million trees. trees. For the second year in a row, plantations with a closed root system will be planted in part of the forests of all VMU regional units. A closed root system is the cultivation of seedlings in special containers, using the latest sowing and cultivation care technologies, which guarantee a better rooting of the trees.

All saplings planted during forest planting are grown in modern VMU nurseries, where the latest and most advanced technologies ensuring the highest quality of saplings are used. During the national forestry campaign “To keep the forest green”, mixed stands consisting of more than three local tree species were planted: oaks, birches, lindens, spruces, pines, black alders, beeches and others.

We are happy that such a large group of compatriots joined the meaningful celebration of the National Forestry “That the forest is green” this year and in this way gave meaning to their love for nature and traditions.
