Mandisa won a Grammy
Born October 2, 1976 in Citrus Heights, California, Mandisa had studied jazz before trying her luck on American Idol in 2005 (show broadcast in 2006). Praised by the jurors, including the very severe Simon Cowell, she amazed the public with covers like I’m Every Woman de Chaka Khan et al Don’t you worry ’bout a thing by Stevie Wonder. She had certainly only finished in ninth place in the rankings, but that did not prevent her from embarking on a brilliant career thereafter, she who specialized in Christian gospel.
In total, four of Mendisa’s six albums –True Beauty , Freedom (2009), What If We Were Real (2011) et Overcomer (2013) – were nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards. The first two for best contemporary pop/gospel album and the last two for best contemporary album.
