Chinese Language Day at the United Nations

Chinese Language Day, celebrated annually on April 20, was established in 2010.

Established in memory of Tsang Tze, the founder of Chinese writing. According to legend, he was the court historiographer of the mythical emperor Huang Di and developed a set of pictograms that later became the basis for hieroglyphs. This made it possible to abandon knotty writing. And the date was chosen in connection with the fact that this is the time of the beginning of the guiyu season, which literally means “millet rain”. According to legend, on this day, the heavenly forces thanked Cang Jie for the creation of Chinese writing by sending a rain of grains to the inhabitants of the Celestial Empire, which saved many from starvation.
