Enormous Snake Fossil Discovered in Western India
Uncovering the Past
New research suggests that an enormous snake once inhabited India millions of years ago. Fossilized vertebrae, recently found near a coal mine in western India, indicate that the snake measured between 36 and 50 feet in length. This astonishing size surpasses that of any known snake species, including the largest living snakes today, according to a report by the Associated Press.
A Size Beyond Imagination
At an estimated weight of up to a ton, the newfound snake, known as Vasuki indicus, presents a fascinating specimen. Scientific Reports published an article on April 18 in which researchers detailed the incredible findings.
A Glimpse into Prehistoric India
Based on the fossilized vertebrae, scientists deduced that Vasuki indicus lived approximately 47 million years ago. These ancient snakes, as envisioned by researchers, were slow-moving ambush predators that used constriction to overpower their prey.
Unearthing the Legend
As the researchers named the snake Vasuki indicus, it draws a relation to the mythical snake king Vasuki in Hinduism. This ancient king, known to wrap around the neck of the Hindu deity Shiva, has become a prominent legend within Indian mythology.
A Diet Fit for a Giant
The researchers speculated that Vasuki indicus likely fed on a variety of prey such as catfish, turtles, crocodiles, and even primitive whales. This astonishing diet further emphasizes the incredible size and capabilities of this ancient snake.
Debunking Cryptid Claims
Giant snakes, similar in size to Vasuki indicus, have been reported in modern times around the world. Although claims of their existence have been circulating, they are often dismissed as hoaxes. These snakes fall under the category of cryptids—animals that are claimed to exist but have insufficient evidence to prove their existence.
Ancient Legends vs. Reality
The mythology of many cultures includes tales of giant snakes, sparking beliefs that such creatures still inhabit our world today. The legends of giant snakes like the Yacumama and Sachamama in South America, alleged to be about 100 feet long, intrigue and captivate our imagination.
A Glimpse into the Past?
One example of a potential encounter with a massive serpent occurred in 1959, when a Belgian Air Force Colonel claimed that a 50-foot-long snake attacked his helicopter in the Congo. However, the authenticity of the photo he provided as evidence has been heavily disputed.
While accounts of giant snakes continue to circulate, including a viral 2023 video claiming a 50-foot snake in the Congo, many of these claims are ultimately debunked. Though the existence of such colossal creatures remains uncertain, our fascination with these mythical creatures endures.
