Erin Cuthbert scored Chelsea’s only goal when she made it 1-0 for the away team just before the break.
Barcelona were awarded a penalty in the second half, but it was ruled out after intervention from the VAR room.
Home team superstar Alexia Putellas then had the team’s best chance to decide when she got a great position just a few meters from the goal in the tenth extra minute of the match.
But the Spaniard’s finish went wide.
Chelsea persevered and claimed the victory and have an advantage before the return which is played in London.
The loss was Barcelona’s first on home turf since February 13, 2019, when they fell at home to Huelva in the league.
Johanna Rytting Kaneryd played the entire match for Chelsea, and Fridolina Rolfö did the same for her Barcelona.
