Libreville, April 19, 2024 (AGP) – The global maritime crime program of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Gabon, on Friday April 19, at the launch of the project “strengthening maritime security and the rule of law at sea in the Gulf of Guinea”, in the presence of the Ministers of Justice, Paul-Marie Gondjout, and Transport, the Merchant Navy and the Sea, Dieudonné Loïc Ndinga Moudouma.
As part of a series of actions carried out by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and its partners, this project, financed by Japan up to 500 million CFA Francs, is aimed at the five countries in the region to provide, in particular Gabon, Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principe, with a legal framework in accordance with international norms.
It also aims to strengthen the capacities of maritime officers and criminal justice actors, with a view to combating maritime crime such as piracy, drug trafficking, migrant trafficking and illegal fishing.
For its implementation, a number of activities will be organized, in particular, an assessment of the legislative framework in the fight against maritime crimes, the drafting of inspection reports with recommendations to fill the mentioned deficiencies, the organization of workshops national revised or drafted new materials. laws against piracy and other crimes committed at sea, as well as training workshops on the law of the sea and other transnational organized crime and training on scientific methods of collecting evidence at the scene of the crime.
Operational maritime exercises will also be held, the development or completion of operational procedures to ensure the coordination of interventions at sea in the event of maritime incidents, the conduct of mock tests to verify the legal framework of countries as well as legal response. of actors in the criminal justice series to maritime crimes.
