The Public Prosecution Service wanted Inez Weski (Taghi’s former lawyer) to become a key witness

Weski states that the justice system made her a strange proposal when she was in custody.

The Rotterdam woman with the striking eye shadow is one of the best-known lawyers in the Netherlands, but she no longer works as a lawyer. And that has everything to do with her arrest in April 2023.

At that time she assisted Ridouan Taghi in the Marengo trial. Marengo is a monster case that revolves around a number of murders, some attempts and a number of preparations for liquidations. Taghi was ultimately sentenced to life in prison, but is appealing.

However, the justice department suspects that Weski was part of a criminal organization and secretly acted as an intermediary between Taghi – he was in the Extra Secure Institution in Vught at the time – and people outside the prison. A few weeks after the arrest in April 2023, Weski was released, but she is still a suspect.

‘Special informant with favors’

In an interview with the NRC Weski now reveals the contents of a conversation she had with the Public Prosecution Service during the time she was in custody. For example, she states that the Public Prosecution Service approached her with the proposal to become a key witness. Or else ‘special informant with favors’.

The conversation with two prosecutors took place in an underground bunker, the location of which is unknown. Weski afterwards describes the conversation as ‘the strangest’ thing she experienced during the time she was in pre-trial detention. It didn’t take much longer than fifteen minutes. “I heard it. I thought: how dare one,” said Weski.

After all, the Rotterdam native is strongly opposed to the use of key witnesses. She even calls the method ‘a terminally toxic quasi-evidence tool’. The Marengo case also uses a key witness: Nabil B. He said he was part of Taghi’s organization, but made a deal with the judiciary in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Book

The interview with NRC was about Weski’s new book The sound of silence. The publication is about the period that the lawyer had to spend under lock and key. The 280-page book is available on shelves from today.
