Cuban doctor Alexander Jesús Figueredo Izaguirre denounced the death of two newborn babies at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital, in the province of Bayamo.
According to the doctor, the babies would have died due to an infection, caused at the same time by the harmless conditions of the hospital.
Through a Facebook post, the doctor reported the events, stating that the two babies had been born healthy, but contracted a bacteria in the medical facilities, known for their poor conditions and poor hygiene, which led to their deaths.
Figueredo indicated that, as usual, the hospital authorities seek to cover up the facts, since they would speak for themselves against the regime and the reality of Cuba, which is promoted to the world as a “medical power.”
“The situation is being handled in silence and behind the scenes so as not to sound the alarms of possible bacterial contamination throughout the hospital and several wings of the hospital have to be closed, to avoid more deaths due to this contamination of a bacteria that has already been the lives of two newborns,” he explained.
“The entire board of directors is racing so that the news does not get out (…) What did they say to the mothers of the deceased?” he added.
The doctor, who resides in the United States, stated that the news reached him through different channels, and promised to report the situation to the World Health Organization (WHO) as soon as he has more information.
The publication generated thousands of reactions and comments, including one from the director of the hospital in question, Adonis Frómeta Guerra, who denied Figueredo’s accusation and even demanded that he apologize in public.
According to Frómeta, it is true that two babies died, but not because of an infection, but because they were born prematurely and with low weight.
“Two deaths on different dates of newborns with a prolonged stay in the neonatology service, which were not related to infection. From a technical point of view, these were newborns weighing less than 1,500 grams, premature and diagnosed with CIUR. Check the source of information,” he commented.
Faced with this response, Figueredo did not remain silent, and assured that his sources are reliable, and that they are patients, doctors and nurses at the hospital, who are “tired” of covering up their lies to protect the system.
“Stop telling the doctors not to contact me because they do it more often (…) I think the only ones who have to apologize are you, the PCC and State security,” he stated.
The case comes a few days after a mother reported the death of her baby due to alleged medical negligence at the Tomás Romay polyclinic in Old Havana.
