Dimitris Papanotas appeared annoyed in his first statement after his expulsion from the SYRIZA European ballot.
“It is a great victory for Adonis Georgiadis, ND, New Left and PASOK at the expense of SYRIZA. I congratulate them for the shallow way of thinking, for dealing with the issue and I am sincerely sorry” he said speaking on Tatiana Stefanidou’s show and added:
“Since yesterday, I had spoken with high-ranking members of the party and told them: “If you don’t have the guts to face the attacks I will receive, then I should resign.” They told me: “No, my Dimitris! We are on your side.” I want to remind Mr. Kasselakis that I was the first to support him from the first video he uploaded…”.

The disputed statements
“I don’t see a woman having a problem in Greece or in the EU in general, unless she wants to have one. That is, if she gets a satrap, who abuses her and does not speak and sits and tolerates it, it is her problem” were the statements of Dimitris Papanotas about a month ago, which recently came to the news again and caused the events.

Bra de fer with Bekatorou
“I hope the party will stand as it should. To make the right move” said SYRIZA MEP candidate – and the person who essentially brought #Metoo to Greece – Sofia Bekatorou on Parapolitik radio in the morning. “I am already in communication with the party and I am waiting for them to position themselves on the matter,” he said, preempting developments.
“I was fired because of Bekatorou. I don’t think it’s ethical behavior between fellow candidates […] I hope that the European Left will at some point deal with the serious issues and that the co-candidates will not discover statements,” the journalist told Tlive and continued: “I am willing to sit on a panel with her, to talk about all the issues.”
The atmosphere is heavy despite the explanations
The truth is that the climate for the journalist was particularly heavy from the moment his statements came back into the news. The effort he made to make amends, speaking of cutting and sewing, was not enough it seemed.
“In the early 90s, in similar incidents against women, gender violence, I was the only one who reacted on television and defended them, as a result of which I also received attacks, violence that is, and courts that lasted about 12 years. Then, I don’t know where all these sensitive people were and they appeared now” he had told ANT1 in the morning.
The Ethics Committee
Several SYRIZA members expressed their disappointment at the journalist’s initial statements. In fact, Dora Tsambazi (also an MEP candidate) told Kontra yesterday that the Ethics Committee should intervene:
“I sat and watched very carefully and as a journalist the statement of Mr. Papanotas, the part that refers to the man and the satrap has not undergone any intervention or anything, his thought is continuous. Nevertheless, if he himself considers that this has not been interpreted correctly, I think he can request all the material from Mrs. Fai Skordas to present it to the institutions of SYRIZA, the Ethics Committee and the institutions and they will decide.”

The decision
The heavy climate naturally reached the president of SYRIZA himself. The issue was expected to be discussed at the meeting of the Executive Bureau, which was scheduled to give an account of the trip to the US, talk about the European ballot and the next actions of the party.
But Stefanos Kasselakis took the decision upon himself and with a post a few minutes before the meeting, excluded the journalist from the ballot. “It is with regret that I am forced to exclude Dimitris Papanotas from the European ballot. I know that he issued a corrective statement, but the issue he referred to is highly sensitive and cannot be discussed. Especially for the party that has human rights and equality on its front page,” he said, among other things.
And all the rest is history…
