Parents’ Emotional Journey of Organ Donation: From Tragedy to Hope

Macarena Fernández and her husband Rafa are donors, what they never thought was that they would have to consider donating the organs of their son, a healthy and happy four-year-old boy who died after encephalitis autoimmune. How do you live at that time? Macarena told Carlos del Amor about it in a very emotional speech Mathematics of the Mirror.

Bruno was born in 2010, today he would be 13 years old, but, unfortunatelyAt four and a half years old, the disease changed everything. He was the son of Macarena Fernández, and his life changed from one day to the next: “One day the child, my son, was playing in the park and, the next day, I was online trying to save his life in ICU. ”

It was then that they began to consider that Bruno was, in some way, still alive in another life, in others: “It is true that Bruno came from a long illness, we did not know if the donation was going to be possible. We didn’t even have time to have the first meeting with the transplant coordinator of Niño Jesús, because Bruno died at home and, as we were planning to donate, we hurried to call our doctors and they moved us to ICU. mobile to the hospital.”

From that moment on, they were asked the question: “Do you really want to go through with organ donation from Bruno?“. They were clear from the beginning: “Why are you going to take everything if you can use it to help other people? ” Although, as Macarena admits, no one is ever ready for that moment: “That is, you are saying goodbye to your son, who is attached to a machine. ”

But, thanks to that movement, right now there is a child playing in a park, a father who can breathe or jump again, people getting a new chance, all thanks to Bruno.

“For me the most important thing, I don’t know if it’s as a mother, that her heart beat in another child.”

Although the donation remains completely anonymous, for Macarena the most important thing was to know how many lives did Bruno save and how much quality of life did he provide: “Because of course, we also decided to donate the corneas, we decided to donate the tissues, the cartilage, the bones … In fact, we also donated part of his brain so that they could study on encephalitis.

Knowing that Bruno’s heart had reached another child was fundamental to her.: “The Child Jesus transplant coordinator called me at 4:00 in the morning and told me: ‘The recipient already has his heart and everything has turned out well.’ ” The next day they called them again to give them the best news: “Bruno’s not going to save one life, he’s going to save several, so you know.”

“It helps us a lot to mourn that Bruno is now living at least 5 or 6 different lives.”

In the end, the fact that Bruno’s heart is beating in another child or that an adult is looking through his corneas is something, He has helped both Macarena and Rafa in their grief.: “It gives some meaning to the things that don’t, because your son, who is four and a half years old and has his whole life ahead of him, is a pleasant and healthy child, to suddenly cut his life. short and there is no way out… For us this has been essential, it has helped us a lot.”
