On Wednesday, the national team came with the grim news that Marika Domanski Lyfors, 63, has suffered from a brain tumor and that she has started her medical treatments. This means that Domanski Lyfors will be on sick leave from his assignment at SvFF.
– We are incredibly taken by this heavy announcement and will do what is in our power to give our support to Marika. The entire SvFF and all players hope for a speedy recovery and will support her, says the national team’s football manager Kim Källström in a press release.
Women’s national football team
Domanski Lyfors has had a tone-setting role within the Swedish association for several years. First as national youth national team captain and then as national women’s national team captain for almost ten years before Thomas Dennerby took over.
“Incredibly tragic”
– It’s extremely tragic, I don’t really know what to say. There are a lot of thoughts spinning, she is really wonderful in every way. We worked together for a long time and now you think of all her loved ones even though Uffe (Ulf Lyfors – Marika Domanski Lyfors’ husband, editor’s note) is no longer alive. It’s tough, says Dennerby to SVT Sport.
In addition, she had a short stay in China as national team captain.
After that, she returned to Sweden and the Swedish Football Association as manager of the women’s national team.
Domanski Lyfors has led Sweden to EC silver in 2001 and WC silver in 2003. In the same year as WC silver, she was voted coach of the year.
The Swedish Football Association announces that it will not conduct further interviews beyond what is stated in the press release.
