The operator of nuclear power plants of Ukraine “Energoatom” announced the start of construction of a plant for the production of small modular nuclear reactors of the American Noltec International. The problem is they aren’t there yet. The American company plans to create the first nuclear reactor of this kind not earlier than five years.
“Energoatom” announced the start of construction of plants for the production of small modular reactors (SMR) in Ukraine using the technology of the American company Noltec International, it is said in the statement of the Ukrainian company, published in Telegram.
“Petro Kotin, Acting Chairman of the Energoatom Board, and Dr. Chris Singh, President and CEO of Holtec International, signed a general agreement on the transfer of Holtec technology for the production of small nuclear reactor components in Ukraine, the operator. of nuclear power plants of Ukraine.
According to Energoatom, the implementation of the agreement will contribute to the reconstruction and economic development of the country after the war, the creation of jobs, modern production facilities, educational programs and will help Ukraine become a regional technology center for the SMR-300 .
“Ukraine will become the center of nuclear technology for all of Europe,” reports Energoatom.
Riaz Awan, vice president of Holtec International, said that Energoatom will be able to produce components from which SMRs will be assembled, and Petro Kotin – that Energoatom will supply them to all European countries.
A year ago, the two companies signed another agreement to install up to 20 SMR-160 reactors in Ukraine. Then they announced that the first pilot project was expected to be implemented by March 2029.
“Even according to the most optimistic forecasts from the press releases at Holtecit is known that the first SMR of this company’s project will appear no earlier than 2029, i.e. in five years,” said Alexander Uvarov, director of AtomInfo-Center.
In December, Holtec International announced plans to build the first SMR-300s at the US Palisades nuclear power plant. The first reactor is expected to be launched in the mid-30s, ie after at least 10 years, the company said in a statement.
In addition to the nuclear project with this American company, Energoatom announced the start of construction of the fifth power unit of the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant with an AP-1000 reactor from the American Westinghouse. The operator said that Ukraine needed new power units because the country lost thermal power plants after missile strikes in Russia. Experts recall that the AR-1000 was built in China in six years, and in the United States in 10 years. “Westinghouse” will build two reactors and in Bulgaria, which provided the Russian reactors already delivered for “Belene”, they decided to sell them to Ukraine and buy the American ones.
